Founded in 1865 and managed by the Karnataka Central Diocese (KCD), Church of South India (CSI), Bishop Cotton Boys’ School carries a heritage that few institutions in this country can equal. Inspired by the vision of Bishop George Edward Lynch Cotton of Calcutta and brought into being by Rev. Samuel Thomas Pettigrew, the school has grown across more than a century and a half without losing sight of the purpose for which it was founded: to shape young men of character, conviction and compassion. It is a distinction we wear with quiet pride — and with a full awareness of the responsibility it places upon every member of this community.
The school that is affectionately known as the ‘Eton of the East’ is, above all, a community — of boys, teachers, parents, and the many generations of Cottonians who have carried its name into the world. Within our fourteen-acre campus on Residency Road, the chapel and the classroom, the playing field and the concert hall, the boarding house and the laboratory each play their part in a formation that cannot be reduced to examination results alone. Academic excellence matters profoundly, and we pursue it with seriousness; but we understand it as one dimension of a richer calling.
Our motto, Nec Dextrorsum, Nec Sinistrorsum — neither to the right nor to the left, but on, straight on — is not merely a Latin inscription above a gate. It is a daily invitation: to resist distraction and expediency, to pursue what is good and true with steady resolve, and to carry that resolve beyond school into every season of life. I ask every boy in this school to take that invitation seriously, and I ask our faculty and parents to hold us to it.
To the boys joining us: you are inheriting a remarkable tradition. You will be stretched — academically, physically, morally — and you will be the better for it. To the families who place their trust in us: we receive that trust as a sacred obligation, and we will honour it.
