Built on a long tradition of prayer
For the first 40 years of the School’s life, no building was set aside for worship — services were held in the dining hall. On Sundays, the boarders worshipped at All Saints’ Church, and later at St. Mark’s Cathedral.
The new Chapel was dedicated on St. Peter’s Day in 1911, giving the School, for the first time, a home of its own for worship. It was renovated in 1993, and stands today much as it did then — a simple, dignified space at the centre of campus life.
A living tradition
A Chapel Prefect is appointed each year to assist the Chapel committee, which is made up of both staff and students — a small but visible reminder that worship at Cottons has always been a shared responsibility between generations.
On the first working day of every month, a Holy Communion service is conducted in the Chapel for all teaching and non-teaching staff, sustaining a rhythm of common prayer that has continued largely unbroken since 1911.
The Chapel continues to inspire the several hundreds of students who pass through the portals of Bishop Cottons today, as it did many generations in the past.
