One school, every stage of his growth

A seamless path from a boy’s very first day in pre-primary to his university doorstep — under masters who know him by name.

An academic tradition stretching back to 1865, guided by a well-qualified faculty and measured by results that have long placed Bishop Cotton Boys’ School among the finest institutions in the country.

Bishop Cotton Boys’ School is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), New Delhi, preparing boys for the ICSE at Std X and the ISC at Std XII. Three senior streams — Science, Commerce and Humanities — allow every Cottonian to pursue the direction suited to his aptitude and ambition. From well-equipped laboratories and broad libraries to smart classrooms and open playing fields, the School provides an education that is rigorous without being narrow: one that has produced generals, musicians, civil servants and captains of industry in equal measure. True to its motto — Nec Dextrorsum, Nec Sinistrorsum, “On, straight on” — the School holds each boy to the highest standard of scholarship and character alike.

The Journey

Four stages, one Cottonian

IAges 4–6

Pre-Primary

A boy’s first encounter with school is shaped by warmth and wonder. Play-led learning builds foundations in language, number sense and curiosity, helping each child settle into routines of listening, sharing and discovery — in an environment designed to make him eager to return each morning.

IIStd I–V

Primary School

The primary years lay the intellectual groundwork for all that follows. Boys build confident literacy and numeracy alongside genuine enquiry skills, while art, music, games and regular library time ensure that learning extends well beyond the textbook. A love of reading, instilled early, becomes one of the most enduring gifts a Cottonian carries forward.

IIIStd VI–X · ICSE

Secondary School

The broad, balanced ICSE curriculum spans English, Second Language, Mathematics, the Sciences, History & Civics, Geography and the Arts. Well-appointed laboratories bring Physics, Chemistry and Biology to life, while the humanities deepen a boy’s understanding of the world he inhabits. Leadership responsibilities and life-skills programmes ensure that academic preparation is matched by the growth of character. The ICSE examination at Std X is the first of two major public milestones in the Cottonian journey.

IVStd XI–XII · ISC

Senior School

The two-year ISC programme is the culmination of a Cottonian’s school education. Boys choose one of three streams — Science, Commerce or Humanities — and study under specialist subject teachers who combine rigorous instruction with genuine pastoral interest. Dedicated university and career guidance ensures that every Cottonian approaches Std XII with clarity of purpose and confidence in the next step.

Science

Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics — with Computer Science as an elective — form the core of the Science stream. Taught in fully equipped laboratories and supported by strong Mathematics and English instruction, this programme prepares boys for undergraduate study in medicine, engineering, pure sciences and allied fields. Practical examination skills and conceptual depth are developed in equal measure.

Commerce

Accountancy, Economics, Commercial Studies and Mathematics equip boys with an analytical command of the business world. The Commerce stream is designed for those who aspire to careers in finance, management, law, chartered accountancy or entrepreneurship. Clear reasoning, numerical fluency and an understanding of economic forces are cultivated from the first day of Std XI.

Humanities

History, Political Science, Psychology, Economics, Sociology and the languages form a programme for boys drawn to the wider human story. The Humanities stream opens pathways to the civil services, law, journalism, design, the social sciences and the arts. Critical reading, structured argument and the ability to communicate with precision are the hallmarks of a Cottonian who has studied the liberal disciplines.

For Learning

Built for inquiry

Science & Computer Laboratories

Fully equipped Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computing laboratories support hands-on, enquiry-led learning at every level from Secondary to Senior School. Boys learn to observe, hypothesise, experiment and interpret — habits of scientific thought that endure long after any single result is forgotten.

The Library

The School library holds a wide-ranging collection spanning literature, reference, history, science and current affairs. Quiet reading rooms and a culture of independent research nurture the lifelong habit of reading that distinguishes a Cottonian education. Boys are encouraged to read beyond the syllabus from their earliest years.

Distinguished Faculty

The teaching staff of Bishop Cotton Boys’ School combines academic qualification with genuine commitment to each boy’s progress. Masters and mistresses teach, mentor and take the time to know every student by name — a tradition of pastoral care as old as the School itself, and as present today as it was in 1865.
